Polarized sunglasses explained: good to wear it all the time?

Polarized sunglasses are very popular, especially among people who frequently engage in outdoor sports like running or cycling. However, it's more than just a fashion trend among sports fanatics. Many of these glasses do look extremely stylish but there are actually a few practical reasons for wearing them as well.

Polarized Sunglasses

What Does Polarized Mean in Sunglasses?

The dictionary defines polarized as being divided, so how does this apply to sunglasses? Here’s a quick explanation. When light hits most surfaces, it typically just bounces off in several angles. However, if the surface is perfectly smooth such as a sheet of metal or calm water, the light bounces off in just one angle. If the angle happens to hit your eyes directly, it causes glare. Polarized sunglasses essentially divide the reflected light, thus reducing glare and allowing the wearer to see more clearly.

Who Should or Shouldn’t Wear Polarized Sunglasses?

As mentioned, polarized sunglasses are often used in sports, especially where glare can interfere with gameplay such as with golf or tennis. These glasses are actually wonderful for any time of outdoor activity that involves plenty of exposure to sunlight, like boating, fishing, or lounging at the beach. People who live in snowy areas also say that wearing polarized glasses improves vision in the snow.

There are no people that are expressly not allowed to wear polarized sunglasses. For instance, it's ok to wear them on occasion regardless of whether one needs to wear a prescription, or if they are wearing contacts. Technically, these glasses are safe for everyone. However, there are situations or occupations where it's advisable not to wear them, as we will discuss in the next section.

Is It Good to Wear Polarized Sunglasses All the Time?

While there are certainly several perks to wearing polarized sunglasses, there are also some situations where wearing them may be more of a detriment than a benefit. For example, you will notice that looking at a cell phone or digital watch display can be difficult while wearing these glasses. It’s better to take them off temporarily in order to see more clearly.

There are also circumstances where glare would actually be an advantage. When driving on icy roads or going skiing, you need to be able to see ice patches for your safety. In the same way, pilots should not wear polarized sunglasses while flying because these can greatly reduce instrument visibility.
